Google is ending the Chromecast brand and pulling its hardware from the market after 11 years, but it remains in the streaming device business. Instead, it is launching a new product called the Google TV Streamer, which competes with high-end streaming boxes like Apple TV and Roku Ultra.
This new device isn’t a direct replacement for the Chromecast dongles; it features a different design and is significantly more expensive. The new product replaces the $50 4K Chromecast with Google TV USB dongle from 2020 with a $100 HDMI set-top box.
Additionally, Google is discontinuing the HD-only Chromecast variant that was introduced at a $30 price point in 2022. There is a possibility that Google might release a cheaper, HD-only version of the new set-top box, but no details have been provided yet.

The adage that you get what you pay for rings true, though, as the Google TV Streamer is superior to the Chomecast with Google TV in almost every way that matters.
The new device includes a processor that claims to be up to 22 percent faster than before, with twice as much RAM (4GB) and four times the storage (32GB).
The device supports 4K streaming at 60 fps via an HDMI 2.1a port and includes HDR support (Dolby Vision) and spatial audio (Dolby Atmos). It also features several enhancements not available in the dongles, such as an Ethernet port.
However, it does not come with an HDMI cable, so you may need to purchase one in addition to the $100 price (although many people already have spare HDMI cables).
The new device is equipped with Google Gemini AI features. According to a blog post from Google, the Streamer can summarize or review TV episodes or entire seasons on command and create customized watchlists based on recommendations for each household member. Google’s AI also powers content suggestions throughout the device’s software.
Announced alongside a new Nest Learning Thermostat, the Streamer is part of Google’s effort to renew interest in the Nest line of smart home products. Besides being a video streaming device, it functions as a smart home hub with Thread and Matter integration, allowing control of Google Home or Matter-compliant devices like cameras or thermostats.
With built-in Thread support, the Streamer features a Thread border router to enhance connectivity.
Preorders for the Google TV Streamer began today, and it will start shipping to buyers on September 26.
